Your daily reminder that for a while there, in the late 80s/early 90s, alternative hip hop was looking to be the way forward. De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Digital Underground, Brand Nubian, the whole Heiroglyphics crew, they were all like “this music can be really smart and good and interesting” and everybody was like “yes, it can” as they went and bought something else.

Here’s one of my favorites, from the later stages of the period, just as it was totally vanishing from the popular radar, doomed to an eternity of only being loved by backpackers and white kids who smoked pot for the first time while listening to Deltron 3030.
